Scope and Contents
This collection consists of 7 scrapbooks : v. 1 (1896-1930). Manuscripts of "Torch Bearers of Civilization," and biographical sketches of 30 engineers including Frank J. Sprague ; v. 2. Photographs of hoists, rails, street car equipments (1892), street cars from G.E. Co. (1895), and photographs of mechanical drawings ; v. 3 (1890-1933). Newspaper clippings about electricity, electrical and mechanical engineering and correspondence ; v. 4 (1920-49). Newspaper clippings and short biographies ; v. 5. Memoirs (1898-1930), photographs, newspaper clippings, manuscripts, and correspondence ; v. 6. Manuscripts of "Local Industries and Immediate Community," "Electric Hoist," "A Summer Hike Northward," "Why Be Thankful," "The Faith of a Layman," "Experiences with a Cooperative Committee" and speeches and discussions, correspondence (1925), invitations (1925), and newspaper clippings ; v. 7. Misc. papers.

Biographical / Historical
Samuel H. Libby was Managing Engineer of the Hoist Dept. the Sprague Electric Works at Bloomfield (N.J.), a branch of the General Electric Company. He was also a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society of Terminal Engineers, a representative of the Sprague Works in the Electric Hoist Manufactures' Assn. (Vice Chairman), the Chamber of Commerce and Civics of the Orange and Maplewood, Lieutenant Governor for New Jersey of Kiwanis, and President of the East Orange Board of Education (1934).
