Scope and Contents

The collection consists of correspondence, 2 small hymn books, account books (1846-1847), bills, receipts, tax records, statements, business cards, etc. Newark-related items include the following: bills from Newark businesses, including clothiers, a stonemason, glass and paint dealers, a wallpaper dealer, a dealer in gardening supplies, and "The Newark Advertiser" (1850s-1860s); and packets of blank checks from the Newark Banking and Insurance Co. (1850s), the Mechanics National Bank of Newark, and National Newark Banking Co. (ca. 1860s).

NOTE: a number of tightly bound packets of bills (mostly fron the 1840s) have not been opened for this survey.

Biographical / Historical

Joseph T. Hopping was a member of New Jersey State House of Assembly from Essex County, 1855-1856. He resided in Caldwell, NJ; his business records indicate large purchases of building materials and payment of workmen doing construction and decorating work, haying, woodcutting, etc.. The bulk of the collection relates to Caldwell, but there are also letters and business records relating to New York, New Brunswick, and a number of nearby communities, including Newark.
