Biographical / Historical
In 1740, Elizabeth Borough was established by Royal Charter in Essex County. In 1855, the City of Elizabeth was created by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature, combining and replacing both Elizabeth Borough and Elizabeth Township. In 1857, the city became part of Union County. Several U.S. state courts exist with names stemming from English common law Court of Common Pleas ; in New Jersey, the Courts of Common Pleas were eliminated when the most recent New Jersey State Constitution was adopted in 1947.
