1 archival box contains oral history transcripts (and relevant microfilms and audio tapes) narrated by Harold Lett (1973, 1974), Paul Windels, J. David Stern, Edmund De Long, Albert L. Vreeland (1974), William Halsey Wood Jr. (on the subject of William Halsey Wood, 1972), Frank Harper (on the subject of Thomas Edison, 1973), A. Hicks Lawrence (on the subject of the Volunteer Work at Camp Meritt during World War I, 1974), Edward Brockie (on the Volunteer Work at Camp Merritt during World War I, 1974), and Alice R. Mayhew (on the history of Newark, N.J. from 1880 to 1940).Some of the original interviews are in the collections of New York university and Columbia University.
Newark-related items are: transcripts and tapes of a lengthy series of interviews with Harold Lett, covering civil rights struggles in Newark from the 1930s, black employment in Newark in the 1930s, the nature of the early Urban League, relations between the Newark Urban League and the NAACP, integration of Newark hospitals, the role of black clergy, the Newark Negro YMCA, the Newark Interracial Council, postwar struggles for integrated housing, etc. (1973, 1974); a transcript and tape of an interview with William Halsey Wood, Jr. on the subject of the life and work of his father, Newark architect William Halsey Wood (1972); and a transcript of an interview with Alice Richardson Mayhew (born Newark 1885), with personal reminiscences of Newark life from ca. 1880 to 1940 (1972)."
