Scope and Contents

A folder labeled "Letters" contains documentation of the Library's efforts to collect material on a wide range of Newark and Essex County organizations. Contents include correspondence between Charles F. Cummings (and other library staff) and the Newark Board of Education, Newark Fire Department, Newark Housing Authority, Newark Collaboration Group, New Jersey Historic Trust, Consumer's League of New Jersey, the Puerto Rican Congress, La Casa De Don Pedro, the Newark Boy's Chorus, the North Ward Center, Newark Emergency Services for Families, Newark Habitat for Humanity, New Community Corporation (Newark), United Community Corporation (Newark), Renaissance Newark, Integrity House (Newark), Seton Hall University, James Street Commons Neighborhood Association, and the Kessler Institute at UMDNJ. Most letters are responses, but some of the original requests are included. Many letters were accompanied by documents for the Library's collection, but the documents themselves are not present. Also included are: a typed list of Newark organizations; a Victoria Foundation grants list (1991); an Essex County Directory (1989); and material from the Documents Association of New Jersey Task Force.

Folders of background material include the following Newark-related items: a list of holistic healthcare providers; an Underground Basketball Association flyer; Newark Public Library time-clock rules; copy of a flyer for Ironbound Ice Skating Rink opening; copy of an article on the election of Bessie Walker (1998); United Way of Essex and Hudson flyers; Emergency Services for Essex County flyers (Newark, 1998); Essex County College events (1998); Mothers of Murdered Sons and Daughters flyer (Newark, December 1998); Crimestoppers brochure (Newark); article on Newark Rotary officers (1992-1993); "Emergency Numbers in Newark" list; article by Barry Carter on STREETS (youth organization); Bankruptcy Conference, Newark Public Library, flyer (1998); article on march in Newark of Urban-Suburban Equal Education Committee (1993); obituary of Walter Pezda, Newark librarian; list of Newark organizations; article on UMDNJ tuberculosis website (1996); list of Newark art organizations/theaters; article on AmeriCorps; Newark free soccer league flyer; article on Newark DoSomething; flyer "Learn to Read and Write" Newark (1996); "Black and Latino Coalition" conference flyer (1995); "Community Information File and Databank Handbook for Newark, Essex County, and New Jersey" (1993), Newark Public Library; "Hispanic Directors Association of New Jersey" (based in Newark) index; article on Newark Best Friends (girls organization); article on AIDS in Newark; article on La Casa; Bethany Baptist Church flyer; Ironbound Health Fair (1994); preregistration form for HUD Tenants' Association Workshops (Nancy Zak); article on Newark Bronze Shields; article on United Caribbean African Alliance; flyer on Ensemble Theatre Company (Newark Symphony Hall); letter re: West Ward Cultural Center; article on Brazilian Independence Celebration, Newark; article on first female police chief, Newark (1992); Jersey Cares project list (includes Newark 1993-1994); and various notes and clippings

Another folder contains questionnaire forms for the Library's planned Community Resource Database; many are filled in with data on individual Newark organizations.
