 Collection — Container: Volume 1

Scope and Contents

The clippings (March 1936-May 1947) in this scrapbook, compiled by Henry A. Schwedes, highlight topics in the history City of Newark; a small amount of material relates to other New Jersey locales. In 1921 Henry A. Schwedes, a graduate of Cornell University (1912) and a resident of Irvington, owned a one-hundred car garage in Newark.

Most of the articles date from Newark's centennial year (1936) and are from the Newark Sunday Call and the Newark Evening News. Subjects include: Newark Airport, athletics, architecture, art and literature, business, the Federal courts, charities, city layout and boundaries, crime, daily life and amusements, entertainment (theatres, broadcasting, music), famous Newarkers, fashion, finance, food and drink, industry, inventions and inventors, libraries, lotteries, mail service (Pony Express, post office), medicine and health, the military (the Revolutionary War through World War I), newspapers, neighborhoods (Vailsburg, Clinton Hill, Down Neck), parks, place names, police and fire departments, the Port (waterways), Princeton University's origins in Newark as the College of New Jersey, public buildings, race, religion, roads, education, St. John's Lodge (Masons), transportation, Newark Penn Station, trees, labor unions, water and lighting systems, wildlife, women and women's clubs, and youth. Also included is an article on the best reasons to live in Newark and extensive material on the 1936 Centennial celebrations.

A much smaller number of post-1936 clippings include additional articles on Newark history. Subjects include the centennial of Grover Cleveland, obituaries and reminiscences of Newark residents, the history of the Newark Academy, and the history of city alleys and roads.
