Scope and Contents

Contents of the collection are as follows:

Folder 1: contains black and white photographs (nine 8" x 10" and one 4" x 6") of downtown Newark street scenes, probably taken ca. 1908. The images show street scenes, buildings, pedestrians, trolley cars, horse carts, automobiles, advertising signs, etc. Four are stamped "Wm. M. Broadwell, Commercial Photographer." One of these is captioned "Cor. Market and Washington St. new Bamberger's Empire Theatre in rear. Date 1908."

Folder 2: contains are 2 photographs of groups of postal workers (1902 and 1903). Also present are 4 large-format negatives, in an envelope marked "Post Office Opening? Newark P.O." The images on the negatives were apparently taken inside the new Main Post Office at Federal Square, with a crowd and speakers(?) present, ca. 1935.

Folder 3: a portrait photograph of Stauhs' daughter Maureen Stauhs Demgard as a baby (undated)

Biographical / Historical

Joseph A. Stauhs was born in Newark ca. 1900. He worked at the city's main post office. He also worked part time as a photographer for the Newark Evening News.
