School News from Newark Newspapers (1)
Scope and Contents
Part 1 of the School News from Newark Newspapers scrapbook collection consists of 39 scrapbooks, arranged in chronological order, of local newspaper clippings reporting issues, events, activities, and announcements of the Board of Education and of individual schools in Newark. In most of the volumes artcles are grouped by topic. Some volumes also contain original correspondence, notes, and memos. Volume 1 (1903-1907), for example, is largely devoted to school reform and expansion and the highly controversial establishment of a smaller (9-member) school board for the City in 1907; this volume includes correspondence of Richard C. Jenkinson, George H. Simonds, Mayor Jacob Haussling, Alderman Patrick J. Ryan, and Schools Superintendent A. B. Poland. Volumes for the 1930s contain much material on unemployment among teachers and the issue of employment of married women in the schools, as well as articles on school sports, budgets and salaries, school construction, etc.
See also: MG Nwk School News (Main), School News from Newark Newspapers [Part 2], which consists of 26 similar volumes, covering the years 1946-1964 and 1973-1976. Part 2 is not available on microfilm.
