Biographical / Historical

The Forest Hill Reading Club, founded in 1896 by residents of the Forest Hill neighborhood, Newark, NJ, still exists today. In its earlier years, the group met twice a month to hear member presentations on such topics as music, art, history, literature, science and current events. Although the atmosphere was casual, the men and women arrived in black tie and gowns as they enjoyed coffee, tea and dessert while discussing the topics for the evening. The club held its 100th anniversary luncheon in 1996 and was relaunched in 1998. Unlike the original society, the revived group functions strictly as a book club.
