Scope and Contents

A substantial portion of the collection is comprised of material related to the preparation of "Coping with Crime in Newark," a report by Dr. Dorothy Guyot, for the Governmental Response to Crime Project, Northwestern University Center for Urban Studies. Included is a draft copy of the report (1980) and transcripts of lengthy interviews [by Guyot?] with informants Donald Malafonte, Charles Cummings, and Bob Blackwell, giving detailed accounts of the relationship of issues of crime and policing to the general political history of Newark during the Carlin, Addonizio, and Gibson administrations. There is also a series of folders arranged by year containing photocopied notes and clippings relating to the project (1948-1978)

McRell, at Essex House (1935); Boiardo, Richard criminal record (1914-39); Interviews from the Guyot Report relating to the criminal justice system in Newark, N.J.; "Coping with Crime in Newark," by Dr. D. Guyot, draft (Governmental Response to Crime Project Northwestern U., Center for Urban Studies); Ledger Book of Det. Frank E. Brex, 1915-1918 (Brex was after made Dep. Chief, Dep. Comm., Acting Comm. of Pub. Safety, retired 1941); Ledger given from the estate of Frank X. Ebler, Sr.; Ledger of policeman Herbert Rothfuss, 1928-1931, given by June A. Erhard.
