Biographical / Historical

Mount Pleasant Cemetery, located at 375 Broadway near Newark's northern boundary, was conceived in 1843 by Horace Baldwin, a jewelry maker. The first burial took place in 1844. The cemetery consists of thirty-six acres, elaborately landscaped and accessible by winding, tree-lined pathways. It is the resting place of many of the most prominent individuals and families of early Newark, and many graves are marked by statuary or imposing monuments. Entry is through a stone and wrought-iron gateway designed by Thomas Stent and erected in 1877. Among the notable Newarkers buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery are: Frederick T. Frelinghuysen, Jonathan French Stearns, Henry Clay Fish, Peter Ballantine, John F. Dryden, Franklin Murphy, Mayors Lebkuecher and Peddie, Edward Weston, and Charles F. Cummings.
