Scope and Contents

This small collection contains photographs, and accompanying text blocks displayed in the Newark Human Rights Commission's 25th Anniversary Exhibit, held at the Newark Public Library in 1977. Material consists of photographs of Commission-sponsored events and meetings. Subjects include, Mayor Carlin, Commissioners, group portraits of children and adults, etc.; captions for the photographs; a chronology of the Commission's history; excerpts from "Newark: A City in Transition," a survey undertaken by the Commission and published in 1959; and exhibit text derived from other sources.

Biographical / Historical

The Mayor's Commission on Human Relations (later the Newark Human Rights Commission) was proposed in 1952 and established by Mayor Leo P. Carlin in 1953, with the general goals of "resolv[ing] the misunderstandings and reliev[ing] the tensions which result from prejudice and discrimination" and fostering "the growth of healthy relationships among the many groups that make up Newark." The Commission publicized anti-discrimination laws and carried on other educational activities; coordinated human rights activities with other Newark organizations; testified before legislative bodies; carried out training of police, teachers, discussion leaders, and others; met with leaders of the various ethnic communities of Newark; and provided scholarships for attendance at human relations programs presented at Rutgers University.
